Met with Linda Branagan, Director of Research, MedWeb, to talk about the day’s scenario.
MedWeb is the industry standard for distributed telemedicine solutions and the delivery of Web-enabled, secure Tele-radiology and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
They have developed a medical response vehicle with a fully equipped mobile communication center that supports a variety of communication networks including satellite, 3G EVDO data and Wi-Fi.
Today MedWeb is planning a sortie to the mission beach lifeguard station to investigate reports of a number of people with flu like symptoms and identify potential patients that are part of the Asian Flu Pandemic.
We discussed the idea of using the battery powered WBP-KR1 mobile EVDO/Wi-Fi router as both a redundant backup for communications on the MedWeb Mobile and as a way to extend the reach and reach-back of their field teams. Linda agreed that this was a worth while activity so we went forward with the plan.
Steve Price, Graduate Student in the SDSU, homeland defense program led part of the team and provided a number of communications tests including a ‘Net Stumbler – War Driving’ site survey and reported that the WBP-KR1 performed well. Other team member contacted potential patients and collected demographic data including personal information (which was scrambled/encrypted to protect their identity), symptoms, current medial condition and medications, allergies, etc.
Detailed data on the MedWeb results can be found on the Strong Angel site.
